Grad Student Workers and Postdocs at Caltech demand safety and security at work
  • On Friday July 19th at noon, on the Parsons-Gates Lawn, come show Caltech administration that GSWs and Postdocs keep each other safe ahead of our next bargaining sessions on July 24th-31st.

On the first day of bargaining, 2000 GSWs and Postdocs proposed essential:

    • Non-discrimination protections that apply the fast, clear timelines of our recently agreed-upon and tabled grievance process, separate from Title IX
    • Immigration protections that support GSWs and postdocs renewing visas with a dedicated fund and guaranteed time off
    • Union security rights that provide GSWs and PDs the power (through funding and contractual rights) to enforce our new contract collectively

But in our last bargaining session, Caltech administration:

    • Struck contract language forbidding harassment and bullying contrary to existing, but unenforceable, Caltech policy, despite that 46% of surveyed workers witnessed or experienced discrimination, harassment, or abuse at Caltech
    • Still has not responded on protections for the international scholars who make up a majority of Caltech, despite the uncertainty of national politics this November
    • Refused real contract enforcement rights, including standard provisions that guarantee strong union resources and the right to act collectively

All of us, the 2000 GSWs and Postdocs at Caltech, deserve:

    • A workplace free from discrimination, harassment, and abuse
    • Security in the workplace regardless of visa status
    • A strong union that can enforce the contract we are collectively fighting for
