In 2022, Postdocs and Academic Researchers ratified their contract with the University of California, which included an agreement from the University to negotiate free or reduced-fee public transit passes by the end of 2025. Beyond providing a major benefit to Postdocs and Academic Researchers—who rely on public transit to commute and travel around the Bay—this agreement supported our shared commitment to reducing our carbon footprint.
UCSF has already fulfilled this commitment by extending BayPass to over 6,000 academic workers and staff. This benefit enormously improves workers’ lives by reducing living costs in one of the most expensive areas in the country and improving access to campus. At UC Berkeley, pending a fee referendum, Academic Student Employees will receive BayPass in August 2025, but UC has declined to negotiate any transit pass for Postdocs and Academic Researchers, clearly violating our collectively-bargained contract. At LBL, the administration looks favorably on the BayPass but sees restrictions on using federal funds for commuting as a hurdle to providing BayPass.
We, the undersigned researchers and UAW members at UC Berkeley and LBL, call on the University to uphold our contract agreement and provide negotiated transit passes to Postdocs and Academic Researchers. We also demand that UC Berkeley and LBL negotiate for BayPass, as UCSF did. It’s the best option for transit in the Bay Area and supports our shared sustainability goals.
