  • Working remotely?:
  • I am uniting with my colleagues to have a meaningful voice in our working conditions. I authorize The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) to represent me in collective bargaining. I understand that Science, Technology, and Engineering Professionals will elect bargaining representatives from amongst our colleagues to negotiate with the UC Administration and that I will pay no dues or fees until the contract has been democratically approved.

  • We’re Joining Together for a Better LBNL and a Better UC

  • As Science, Technology, and Engineering Professionals (STEPs) at LBNL, we, like thousands of research and engineering employees across the country, are joining together to have a greater say in our workplace. Without collective bargaining, we have seen stagnant wages, unaffordable housing and long commutes, inequitable hybrid and remote work options, as well as a lack of transparency in administrative policies. If our benefits and working conditions are secured in a collective bargaining agreement, UC/LBNL cannot change the terms of our employment without our consent. When we are able to communicate and negotiateas equals with UC/LBNL, and as a result live more securely, we will be able to better serve our Lab community and the research and public service missions of LBNL and UC. STEPs are joining thousands of other UAW members in raising workplace standards and building our political voice to protect and increase funding for public research and education. Like the over 100,000 employees at LBNL and UC who have already formed unions, we deserve the voice andrespect we gain through collective bargaining.

  • About signing a union authorization card

  • Union authorization cards enable us to demonstrate to the CA Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) that wewant to form a union and bargain as equals with UC Administration. If a majority of us sign cards authorizingrepresentation through UAW, we can file a petition with PERB to form a union or join an existing UAW bargaining unit.

We are joining as a union so we can bargain collectively with UC, because collectively we have more power tonegotiate than we have as individuals. Collective bargaining means more rights and more power to shape our lives.

We are joining over 130,000 higher education workers within UAW in efforts to achieve better working conditions, wages & benefits

    Without a union:

    • UC/LBNL unilaterally determines our workingconditions and can change them at any time withoutour consent.

    With a union:

    • We elect bargaining representatives that gather inputfrom all STEPs.
    • Our bargaining representatives negotiate on equalfooting toward a fair agreement with UC.
    • We vote on whether or not to approve any agreement.
    • That contract secures our terms and conditions ofemployment and is binding and enforceable, usuallythrough appeal to a neutral arbitrator
