We are nearly 2,000 Communications, Marketing and Sales (ComMaS) professionals who take pride in telling the story of the University of California to our community, donors, employees, students and peers. We bring to life our students’ inspiring journeys, the triumphs of our sports teams, the significance of our innovative research, the transformative impact of donations and so much more. UC is known for its excellence around the world because of the essential work of ComMaS.
We love the mission-driven work we do at UC, and we want to continue it. We need UC’s support to do our best work to advance our shared mission, including continuing to fund UC for generations to come. ComMaS are working alongside UC and our UAW 4811 colleagues to get the CA Science Bond on the November ballot.
The sooner we get a fair contract, the sooner we can focus our energy on this essential work to support the longevity and success of UC. We deserve to be treated with respect and dignity as indispensable members of our UC community. Yet many ComMaS struggle to balance heavy workloads, while feeling undervalued and uncertain of their long-term career growth and job security. Instead of resolving these issues and supporting talented staff, UC is coming up with creative ways to move our work out of the unit.
Recently, management laid off our colleagues in Berkeley Athletics only to ask them to apply to non-ComMaS positions for the same work. ComMaS took immediate action to enforce our rights and management took an immediate step back, bringing those positions back into our union, but still our Berkeley Athletics colleagues have been wrongly laid off.
12,000 fellow staff in UAW 4811 won a groundbreaking contract with precedent-setting rights and standards, including stronger lay-off protections and contract-to-career conversion. While UC has offered many of the same rights as our UAW 4811 colleagues, we are still waiting on specific issues that matter to ComMaS. In order to continue the work that makes UC a world-renowned institution, we ask management to bargain in good faith, protect ComMaS jobs at UC, and stop holding up a fair contract.
